B.H. Roberts and My Father

This is a photo of my father and all the missionaries in his mission in the eastern states. His mission president was B.H. Roberts. He had a huge influence on my father his whole life and when we were going through mother's books he had a whole collection of Robert's books. My father is in the middle, next to Sister Roberts. Why did all the women back then look so stern. It must have been a difficult life. The missionaries back then went without purse or script. They were dependent upon others, and not necessarily other Mormons for their food and lodging.

What a neat picure. How old was Grandpa?

Ann, he was 19 or 20 or 21. They look old, don't they?

He looks like he is 30!

I just gave my RS lesson Sunday and read his "Ye of Little Faith" story how they would ask any farmhouse they stopped at for lodging that night. I asked our own sister missionaries how they would feel doing that. They were grateful, of course, to have their little apartment waiting each night. A mission is hard enough, right?

We are spoiled today and it is a different world. You wouldn't trust two young men in your house these days.

I can see Ben in his face! It all looks austere: the ceiling the walls, the rug...I've never seen this picture, it was neat to get a glimpse of him as a boy.
